How to Safely Maintain Your Chimney

There’s nothing better on a chilly evening than building a fire in the fireplace, but an improperly maintained chimney can lead to smoke backing up into the home, causing smoke damage to bricks and walls as well as leading to a potentially dangerous buildup of carbon monoxide. In more serious cases, an improperly maintained chimney can result in a chimney fire, with devastating results.

If you own a home with a fireplace, chimney safety is absolutely vital. How do you know when to have your chimney swept? According to The National Fire Protection Association Standard 211, "chimneys, fireplaces, and vents shall be inspected at least once a year for soundness, freedom from deposits, and correct clearances. Cleaning, maintenance, and repairs shall be done if necessary." Don’t assume that because you haven’t used your fireplace much in the past year that it will be safe this year. Birds and small animals can build nests in the flue. Masonry can become cracked over time and may need to be repointed. Chimney caps and flashing can also become dislodged due to age or weather. It’s a good idea to have a qualified chimney inspection every year before using your chimney. If you have a creosote buildup that requires any kind of chemical treatment, it is best to have it treated before the weather drops below the mid-40s.
