Christmas Tree Safety
If your family chooses to have a live Christmas tree, please take serious precautions to ensure your safety. Live trees are very safe IF you keep them watered. Needles shouldn’t come off your tree easily and live trees shouldn’t be kept up longer than two weeks.
You’ll need to water the tree every day without fail. Once the tree goes a day without water, the sap will seal over the cut in the trunk and prevent the tree from taking up any more water. The needles will dry out very quickly once that happens. As further precaution, be sure to keep the tree far away from ignition sources such as candles and fireplaces. Sparks from a wood burning fireplace can smolder in a tree for hours before igniting. Also check all your lights and electrical cords.
Don’t use any cords that appear worn or frayed. When in doubt, leave it out. Once the holiday is over, dispose of your tree properly by taking it to a recycling center to be chipped or through your community curbside pickup. Do not burn it in your fireplace or wood-burning stove.
