Home Spring Cleaning in Fairfield County, CT

As the weather starts to warm up, this is the time to start spring clean up projects around your home. This is the best time to check the landscaping and drainage around your home.  Snow can lead to compressed soil close to the foundation, which can then erode during spring rains. Also check the edging on sidewalks and driveways as shoveling or snow blowers can dig up soil and leave these concrete surface undermined and prone to cracking. If you have used any kind of ice melt products over the winter, power washing your sidewalk and driveway may be a good idea to remove any chemical residue.

Check for any winter wear and tear on your home such as loose or damaged roof shingles, siding or shutters.  If you have a deck or wooden porch, check for loose or damaged boards. Inspect concrete or brick steps for signs of cracking. There will need to be repaired to prevent further damage. As water seeps into the cracks and refreezes, the damage may become too extensive to patch and could lead to a costly replacement project.

This is also a good time to check and clean your gutters.  Make sure they are still firmly attached to the house and angled to drain properly. Heavy snow and winter winds can cause the metal to contract and shift away from the house. If you had any ice damming, you will want to pay special attention to those areas during your spring inspection.
