Noreaster and Hurricane Wind Damage in Fairfield County
One of the most often overlooked causes of leaks in the home is wind damage. After a hurricane or exceptionally heavy Nor'Easter, it's common to check for damage, but early spring often brings high winds on clear sunny days. While these blustery days may be wonderful for flying kites, unfortunately they can also also send other things flying away such a downspouts, gutters, shutters, roofing shingles and aluminum siding. It's important to check your home for wind damage after any particularly windy day. Over the course of the winter, shingles especially can become worn or damaged from the weather and are subject to loosening. It's far better to find out you have missing shingles, gutters or siding on a clear sunny day when you have time to fix it rather than during the next rainstorm when you suddenly have water cascading into your attic.
If you do notice wind damage and there has been rain, be sure to check the inside of your home for any water damage. It will be vital to dry out any damp areas to avoid mold growth. Quickly repair any damage that you can do safely on your own, such as a downspout that has decided to lodge itself in the backyard hedge. If you must use a ladder to replace roofing shingles, shutters or siding, please use common sense and proper ladder safety. Have someone else to hold the ladder and to help you. As always, call a professional contractor if you do not feel confident in your ability to tackle a repair project safely.
