Rainwater Collection Systems

Rain can create a lot of headaches for homeowners. Leak roofs, overflowing gutters, and flooded basements have all been covered on this blog. But as the saying goes, April showers bring May flowers. Why not think about putting that rainwater to good use?  Rainwater collection systems can be used for many non-potable water needs, the most common of which is for gardening.

Depending on your needs, collections systems can be very simple or somewhat complex.

The basic components are:

• The collection site, usually the roof.
• A conveyance to the storage unit, usually the gutters, downspouts etc.
• A means of filtration, which will vary depending on your intended use for collected water.
• A storage unit, usually a rain barrel or cistern.
• A means of distributing the collected water as needed.

You need to be aware of the materials used in your collection system. Asbestos roofing, lead flashing, and certain plastics can leach harmful chemicals or particulates into your collected water. These will not be a concern for water used for irrigating landscaping but may present an issue in a vegetable garden.  In addition, if you are a backyard farmer, you will want to test your collected water on a regular basis to check for harmful bacteria

Using rainwater collection for non-potable water needs is both Eco-friendly and economical in the long run. Those with municipal water suppliers can save money on their water bill while those with well water can reduce stress on the well.
