Preventative Care for Your Roof

A cool breeze during a warm summer day is inviting, but the summer season is also when we see a lot of damage to homes and roofs from rain, hail and high winds. Your efforts to be proactive in monitoring the condition of your roof following a heavy storm and throughout the year can save you costly repairs in the long run.

Roof damageThe most obvious damage to your roof can result when wind suction gets underneath a shingle, raising and peeling the shingle from your roof. Not only will more shingles follow, but water damage from rain becomes an issue as well. And remember to keep your drains and downspouts free of leaves and other debris, to avoid placing excessive stress on that part of your roof. Following a hail storm, it is wise to inspect your asphalt shingles for missing granules, cracking or bruising. Damaged shingles allow water to penetrate your roof and cause water damage over time.

Throughout the year, periodically inspect your roof to ensure your gutters are clear and that your shingles are in place and in good repair. To protect your home, keep extra roof shingles handy in the event that weather does cause minor damage to your roof. You can prevent major damage in the future.
