The Perils of Ignoring Your Rain Gutters

Rain gutters are essentially the drainage system for your home, and as such, they play an important role in keeping your roof and walls healthy.

cleaning out guttersThink of your rain gutter system as your home’s circulatory system. If your arteries become clogged, your heart can’t function properly and you can become very ill. Likewise, if your gutters become clogged with leaves, dirt and debris, then melting snow and rain water cannot drain away. As water collects in the gutters, it pools on the roof, seeps under the shingles and often finds its way into the walls. The roof, the soffit and fascia, as well as the walls of your home, will slowly suffer damage from the blockage. Once that damage accumulates, you may end up with costly repairs as a consequence.

Your rain gutters should be cleaned out at least twice a year, to remove leaves and other debris that clog the drains. Be careful not to just wash the debris into the drain, because it will likely clog the spout. If you’ve ignored your gutters for too long and have already sustained damage that is allowing rainwater to leak into your walls, contact us immediately.
