The Emotional Cost of Flood Damage
Often when you experience a fire or flood in your home, you’re not just dealing with the logistics of restoration and clean up. You are dealing more with the emotional devastation that comes from having your family put in peril, finding that you have no place to live, and realizing that you have lost many, if not all of, your possessions. It can be an extremely stressful experience. Even a small fire or flood can be very frightening and cause a great deal of damage.
While we genuinely hope that no one ever experiences such loss, we do believe you can diminish your losses if you are prepared ahead of time. There are things that you can do now to make it easier to cope in the event of an emergency.
We suggest the following:
Keep a copy of your homeowner insurance policy and insurance agent’s phone number in a fireproof, waterproof box, so that if there is damage to your home, you have quick access to the information. You can also keep an electronic copy of the records in a cloud-based storage so that you can access it from anywhere.
- Keep handy an emergency credit card that you don’t use (unless you pay it off every month), so that if you have to stay in a hotel for a night or two, you have a way to pay for it.
- Recognize that stuff is just stuff, and rather than put your family at risk, leave immediately when there are warnings. Do not take the chance that you’re family will be trapped or injured.
