- Establish a game plan BEFORE Disaster Happens. For your business contact a Disaster Restoration Company, like ServiceMaster now, to see what you can do to prevent excessive loss beforehand.
- Check your insurance coverage to make sure it reflects the current state of your home or business. Consider adding flood insurance and coverage for additional living expenses in case your home is uninhabitable after a storm.
- Doing a home inventory can save you time and make filing a claim easier, ensuring you don’t forget anything. Consider an updated video inventory of your home or business. Keep receipts for valuable items and consider separate coverage for these things.
- Protect your property by trimming trees, using with hurricane straps or clips, boarding up windows and having a safe location in your basement with supplies to get you through until the worst has past. Secure all outdoor furniture, decorations, and garbage cans. Install storm shutters on your home, or cover windows with plywood to keep them from breaking.
- Be prepared to flee: keep a full tank of gas. Become familiar with alternate routes. Leave early. Follow recommended evacuation routes. Do not drive into flooded areas. Take your pets with you.
- Secure your home by closing and locking doors and windows.
- Unplug electrical equipment such as radios, televisions and small appliances. Leave freezers and refrigerators plugged in unless there is a risk of flooding. If there is damage to your home and you are instructed to do so, shut off water, gas and electricity before leaving.
- Dress appropriately- good shoes, durable rain gear, hat, umbrella.
- Listen to the forecast. Pay attention to any warnings and determine whether to evacuate or ride out the storm. If you choose not evacuate, find a safe shelter to stay in that is adequately outfitted with emergency supplies.
- Purchase supplies such as non-perishable food, water, flashlights, a portable radio, batteries, and a first-aid kit.
- Stay away from any windows. Find an interior room in which you have access to emergency supplies.
- Don’t light candles. Ensure you have several flashlights with plenty of extra batteries on hand.
- Have your portable radio on so you can monitor the weather and follow any instructions of local authorities.
- Don’t leave your secure area too soon. The storm may appear to have calmed but you may simply be in the eye.
- First, get important papers and special photos in order and secured in plastic. Identification is difficult and time-consuming to replace: so be sure to include social security cards, birth certificates, high school diplomas or GED certificates, titles or deeds to property, as well as your hurricane insurance policy. Photos of special occasions or loved ones cannot be replaced, so including these is important as well.
